The Words We Use
- Deb Geisler (m), Jim Mann, Ian Stockdale
Do you sell "memberships" or "admission tickets"? Do you have "program participants" or "pros"? Words matter. They identify us, help form our opinions, modify our behavior, and can give us a sense of belonging to the same tribe. Is there a difference between "dealers" and "hucksters"? Is there something wrong with "fringe fans"? Does the term "femmefan" irritate you no end? Words serve, to some extent, as the "memes" of fandom and the fannish community. They convey messages, and can have great transformative power. We’ll discuss the words we use, and also take a look at misunderstood words: for example — is it "marketing" or "manipulating"? (a random example <g>)
Ads/Sponsorship
- Steven Cooper, Eemeli Aro
Join this round table to exchange ideas, strategies, good tactics, and scary tales of disasters in the making....
Fannish Goodwill (with a Discursion on the Art and Science of Schmoozing)
- Stephen Boucher (m), Rene Walling, Jim Murray, Geri Sullivan
How to Get It, Build It, Maintain It, Break It...? After all, this is one of the perhaps the major method we use to maintain our connections (and, dare we say it, market ourselves.) An exchange of the stories and experiences that revolve around "good-will points", with hopes that these will help us improve our skills in this area.
What Makes a Good Hugo Category?
- Mary Kay Kare
Which categories are good as is? Which are broken? How can they be improved? What would make them worse? Do we need more awards, or do we have enough (or more than enough)? (Fight it out here, and maybe leave it off the smofs list??? One can only hope.)
